Canvas: How to Use the Read Aloud Feature in G-W's Online Textbook
print icon

Most links in a Canvas course will automatically open within Canvas. If you would like to enact a Text-to-Speech or Read Aloud feature, you will need to open the Online Textbook outside of Canvas in order to use an extension/app within the browser.

Please Note: G-W does not endorse any specific text-to-speech apps or extensions. We cannot guarantee this method will work on your computer. It depends on if your school/administrator allows you to use this feature. We cannot guarantee the content will be read correctly.

  1. Go to a specific course with G-W resources and find the link for the Online Textbook.
  2. To the right of that specific link, select the 3 dots, then select Edit.
  3. Check the box next to "Load in a new tab" then select Update.
  4. You will receive the following message on the next screen, "This tool needs to be loaded in a new browser window." Select the "Load Resource in a new window."
  5. The next time you select the Online Textbook link the content will open in a new browser window (outside of Canvas).

Please note: You will need to add a Chrome Extension or App (depending on the browser you are using) in order to complete the following steps. Please check with your School District/Institution to know which extensions/apps are approved.

  1. Select the Chrome Extension you added to your browser (in this example we are using the Read Aloud: Text-to-Speech extension) and follow the prompts for your extension.
  2. Select "Read this page."
  3. The text will be highlighted as the narrator reads aloud.
